Social Media: The Future of PR

What is social media?  Well, to “old people” it is just something us “young folk” rot our brains with and get ourselves into trouble with, however, it is more than that – much more than that!

Social Media has exploded the past few years and it has gone further than just a way of socializing – It has turned into a way of being.  Social media is the reason why you are reading this blog right now, the reason you know what is going on in all parts of the world, and the reason why you know what Kim Kardashian had for dinner.

When Social Media began it was pretty much just like what older people think it is, a way for teenagers to socialize and get into trouble; however, everything changed when Facebook and Twitter came into the picture.

As we have all seen – thanks to The Social Network – Facebook did not start with a bang.  It took a few years to expand and become what it is today.  As it has grown it has evolved into more than just social networking, it is now one of the most popular ways to advertise and market a business or product – and that is where Public Relations comes in.

Public Relations thrives off of people and what they want and don’t want, what they like and don’t and like, etc.  So what better way to find out what people want and like?!  Facebook and Twitter have become most companies number one method for customer service.  It is an instant and easy way for customers to share their thoughts.

Facebook and Twitter are not the only ones in the game anymore – now we have Google+, Pinterest and Instagram.  Companies and PR professionals are taking advantage of them all – and it is working.

So where do you think social media is going?
